Simona Sugoni

Indian classical dancer, teacher in Bharatanatyam and Bharatanrityam styles and yoga instructor.


Her connection with India began in 1996, with long stays in Varanasi, where she trained in Hatha Yoga and approached Indian classical music through the study of the bansuri, with Sohan Lal and Khayal chant with Mangala Tiwari.
In 2000, a turning point with the encounter that would shape her path: Indian dance theatre in Bharatanatyam style, an art form she immediately felt as her own.
She began studyng Bharatanatyam with Giovanna Leva, a direct disciple of Yamini Krishnamurty, and deepened her practise under Krishnamurty's guidance at her school Nritya Kaustubha in new Delhi.
In 2008, she began a new phase of study with Jayashree Rajagopalan, disciple of Padma Subrahmanyam and focusing on Bharatanrityam and joining the Nrithyodaya company in Mumbai. Under her guidance Simona also specialised in Tala (the rhytmic system of Indian music and dance) and Nattuvangam (the rhytmic vocal art that accompanies classical dance).
She has performed exstensively across India including several editions of the Natyanjali festival in temples across Tamil Nadu including the legendary temple of Chidambaram.
Simona has taken part in cultural events in Italy and abroad, including Tarraco Viva in Tarragona as part of the LVDI SCAENICI company.
She lives in Tuscia, region in central Italy, where she teaches and promotes dance and yoga.
She also sings folk and traditional music, and she is part of the choir “modi contadini” founded by Giovanna Marini.
